Sherwood Pictures Announces Fourth Movie: COURAGEOUS

/PRNewswire/ -- Sherwood Church, home of the hit independent movies FLYWHEEL (DVD only), FACING THE GIANTS, and FIREPROOF (2008's top indie film), at its Sunday evening service tonight, announced the theme and title for Sherwood Pictures' fourth movie. Senior Pastor Michael Catt, Executive Pastor Jim McBride, and ministers Stephen and Alex Kendrick--collectively the leadership team of Sherwood Pictures--made the announcement.

"The movie is about fatherhood and the title is one word: COURAGEOUS," Alex Kendrick said, briefly outlining the plot. "Four fathers who are all in law enforcement--who protect and serve together--go through a terrible tragedy," he said. "They begin looking at their role as fathers . . . and they begin challenging one another to fulfill God's intention for fathers."

That single-word title, Pastor Catt said, echoes God's call for men to "rise with courage" in their homes and as leaders. This at a time when 4 of 10 marriages end in divorce* and more than a third of all children live away from their biological fathers.

"The statistics on fatherless children are devastating," McBride said. "And because the family is the building block of society, one important place to rebuild families is through fathers who stay and lead and love."

"God led us," co-writer and producer Stephen Kendrick said to the audience of church members, many of them volunteer crew, cast, or catering in earlier Sherwood movies. "We believe God is calling men to rise up with strength and with leadership in their homes, with their families and with their children."

"For more then a year we've prayed to be sure that we're pursuing God's idea and not our own," Catt said. "With action, drama, and humor, this film will embrace God's promise in the Bible to, turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers."

Focusing on Fatherhood

"We focus on the crucial role of father; it's not just to be a father who loves his kids," said Alex Kendrick, co-writer/director of COURAGEOUS. "It's to be engaged with a purpose--to be a father on purpose."

All four leaders of Sherwood Pictures are husbands and fathers. Pastor Catt has two children; Pastor McBride has four; Stephen Kendrick has four; and Alex Kendrick has six.

More Than a Movie

Sherwood movies entertain as they touch audiences where they live, and they show the means to live more fully through faith in God. FLYWHEEL focused on compromise and business integrity; FACING THE GIANTS on despair and hope; FIREPROOF on a dying marriage rekindled.

All Saints Anglican Continues Beth Moore Series

All Saints Anglican Church in Peachtree City will offer another Beth Moore Bible Study course for women beginning September 15th . The program is open to the public.

The eight-week course is entitled “Esther: Its Tough Being A Woman” and is scheduled for Tuesday nights 7-8 p.m. at the Peachtree City United Methodist Church Windgate Road campus, which All Saints is purchasing on a lease-to-buy plan. A daytime class is also available.

McAfee School of Theology to Hold Ginn Lectures on Christian Faith, Modern Science September 15

Mercer’s James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology will hold the second annual D. Perry and Betty Ginn Lecture Series on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 10:45 a.m. in the Cecil B. Day Hall on the Atlanta campus. The lecturer will be Dr. Robert J. Russell, an expert on the relationship between faith and science. His topic will be “Scientific Cosmology, Philosophy and Creation Theology: Creative Mutual Interactions.”

“The Ginn Lectures bring leading authorities in the field to McAfee who challenge pastors and students to think about the relationships between science and faith as they explore the implications of each for the other on the frontiers of human knowledge and experience,” said Dr. R. Alan Culpepper, dean of the McAfee School of Theology. “Dr. Russell is one of the nation’s foremost experts on the interaction between theology and science, and his perspective will certainly advance this lecture series.”

Dr. Russell is the founder and director of the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences and the Ian G. Barbour Professor of Theology and Science in Residence at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif. He is the author of Cosmology from Alpha to Omega: Towards the Mutual Creative Interaction of Theology and Science (Fortress Press, 2008). Dr. Russell serves as co-editor of Theology and Science journal. Dr. Russell co-edited Resurrection: Theological and Scientific Assessments (Eerdmans, 2002) and edited Fifty Years in Science and Religion: Ian G. Barbour and His Legacy (Ashgate, 2004). He is the winner of a PCRS/Templeton Grant for Research and Writing on the Constructive Engagement of Religions and Science for his proposed book, Time in Eternity: Theology and Science in Mutual Interaction.

He has co-edited a multi-volume series of books focused on scientific perspectives on divine action through an international research conference program co-sponsored by Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences and the Vatican Observatory, including such topics as quantum mechanics, chaos theory, evolutionary and molecular biology, the neurosciences and quantum cosmology. His current research topics include: resurrection, eschatology and scientific cosmology; quantum mechanics, biological evolution and divine action; evolution, theodicy and Christology; philosophical assumptions in contemporary scientific cosmology and their theological roots; time and eternity from a Trinitarian perspective in relation to time in physics.

Dr. Russell holds a Ph.D. in experimental physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, an M.Div. and an M.A. in theology and science from the Pacific School of Religion, an M.S. in physics from the University of California Los Angeles, and he triple-majored in physics, religion and music at Stanford University. He is ordained in the United Church of Christ and is a member of the Society of Ordained Scientists. His wife, Charlotte, is also a UCC minister.

The D. Perry and Betty H. Ginn Lectures in Christian Faith and Modern Science were endowed by the Rev. Dr. D. Perry Ginn to encourage a deeper understanding by clergy and students of science and how it relates to the Biblical revelation. The former pastor of several Georgia congregations, including First Baptist Church, Gainesville, and Peachtree Baptist Church in Atlanta, he is semi-retired and serves as pastor of the North Clarendon Baptist Church in Avondale Estates.

The Summit to Participate in National Back to Church Sunday Sept 13

The Summit is participating in Back to Church Sunday, a national movement of churches to encourage formerly churched people to ReThink Church and try it again. According to LifeWay Research, 38 percent of people are receptive or highly receptive to attending church. 82 percent say they would be open to attending church if a friend invited them. But, unfortunately only 21 percent of active church-going Christians invited someone to church last year! The Mission Society Appoints Three New Board Members

Join Diverse Board of Interdenominational Religious and Community Leaders

The Mission Society today announced the appointment of three new members to its board of directors: William O’Brien, co-director of BellMitra Associates, Frisco, Texas; Rev. Robert Sturdy, rector of Trinity Church, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Rev. Robert Kwasi Aboagye-Mensah, presiding bishop of the Methodist Church - Ghana, Accra, Ghana.

The Mission Society's Board of Directors is formed by committed Christians who have a heart for mission ministries. The board is composed of 20 members.

“We’re honored and blessed to have these three dynamic individuals join our board of directors,” said the Rev. Dr. Philip R. Granger, president and chief executive officer of The Mission Society. “Throughout their careers they have exhibited a commitment to missions and a passion for service, and we will greatly benefit from their alliance with our organization.”

William O’Brien is co-director of BellMitra Associates, teaches each fall at the John Leland Center for Theological Studies in Washington, D.C., and serves as adjunct professor at Dallas Baptist University in the field of missions. O’Brien was the founding director of The Global Center at Samford University and formerly a missions professor at Beeson Divinity School. He has served on the board of directors of The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, as a senior associate of the Evangelical Fellowship of Missions Agencies, and is a former president of the American Society of Missiology. He is also a former executive vice-president of the International Mission Board (SBC).

O’Brien co-authored “Choosing a Future for U.S. Missions” and wrote “Challenges Confronting Baptist Missions” in 2003 for The Baptist History and Heritage Society. O’Brien holds a liberal arts degree from Hardin-Simmons University and a master of church music degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. His alma mater honored him with a doctor of divinity degree in 1981.

Rev. Robert C. Sturdy is an Episcopal Priest currently serving as the rector of Trinity Church in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He is the youngest serving rector of the past 50 years in the Diocese of South Carolina. Sturdy received his theological education at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford University, England, and did his undergraduate studies at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina.

Rev. Robert Kwasi Aboagye-Mensah currently serves as presiding bishop of the Methodist Church - Ghana. An author of several books and editor of the Africa Bible Commentary, Aboagye-Mensah has been nominated for the Millennium Peace Award and was honored in 2005 with Ghana’s second highest national award, presented by the president of the Republic of Ghana. Aboagye-Mensah holds advanced degrees from the University of Ghana, University of Nottingham, University of Aberdeen and Virginia Theological Seminary.

Founded in 1984 in the Wesleyan tradition, The Mission Society recruits, trains, and sends Christian missionaries to minister around the world.
