/PRNewswire/ -- Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF), a fellowship of about 1,800 Baptist churches across the country, officially kicks off You've Got The Time this month.
You've Got The Time is a nationwide Bible listening initiative launched by Faith Comes By Hearing, the world's foremost Audio Bible ministry. Almost 14,000 churches have participated and more than four million Audio Bibles have been provided free to churchgoers.
Participating churches listen to the Audio New Testament 28 minutes a day for 40 days. Research shows nearly 70 percent of believers have not read the New Testament and many do not read their Bible regularly.
Daniel Vestal, CBF's executive coordinator, is encouraging all 1,800 churches in the fellowship to participate.
"We place high value on Scripture," said Vestal. "We believe the Bible is central to the life of the individual and the church. But if we're honest about it, all too often we spend little or no time with God's Word in our daily lives... that's why CBF is embarking on this new initiative unlike any we have ever attempted before."
Bo Prosser, CBF's coordinator of congregational formation writes, "The You've Got The Time Bible listening initiative is gaining momentum. We're feeling the excitement and affirmation."
More than 200 CBF churches signed up and half of these finished listening before the close of 2009.
For those listening to the Audio Bible, Prosser said he anticipates personal and congregational spiritual growth as people engage in serious conversations centered around Scripture. He also expects engaging in the Scriptures will encourage support of global missions.
CBF plans to sponsor Audio Bible recordings for people who, due to poverty and illiteracy, don't have access to God's Word. Offerings received are slated for recording the Bible in audio for the most neglected people groups where CBF personnel work.
Half of the world's population is functionally illiterate and lives on less than $2 a day. Faith Comes By Hearing has seen how God's Word in audio breaks through poverty and illiteracy barriers, giving everyone the opportunity to hear God's Word.
"We will be transformed by listening to God's Word, reflecting on it, discussing it, and sharing it with others," said Vestal. "It will create greater desire to study and share Scripture as we open ourselves to the Spirit by hearing the Word of God."

FIREPROOF Pastor Reveals Church Secret
/PRNewswire/ -- How does a church in southern Georgia turn out box-office-hit movies? The secret isn't superior production or top actors but a top-down policy to make revival the first, second, third, and fourth priority.
Michael Catt, senior pastor of Sherwood Church in Albany, shows the roots of that policy as he opens The Power of Surrender: Breaking Through to Revival," number three in his trilogy on God-dependence, from B&H publishing: hitting stores on March 1. "I am a man who begins with the thought of 'What if?'" Catt writes. "What if we were willing to lay hold of the altar and not let go until the Lord blessed us and changed our lives? What if we stopped our conniving and started a concentrated emphasis on seeking Him?"
Sherwood Church senior pastor since 1989, Catt is executive producer of the surprise movie successes FIREPROOF (2008's top-grossing indie film), FACING THE GIANTS (the breakout Christian film of 2006), and FLYWHEEL (now in a re-mastered DVD). The Power of Surrender maintains that surrender is the key to revival and revival is the key to spreading the gospel--by any means.
"I had a roommate in college who didn't like the word surrender when associated with Christian life," Catt writes. "I find it refreshing. It's the awareness of my desperate need for something or someone to lift me out of the miry clay and set my feet on solid rock . . . It's not overstating to say revival is our key to survival."
Catt sees the disciplines of revival lived out in his congregation firsthand. "People are being saved. Members are inviting their lost friends and un-churched neighbors," he says. "Attendance shot up. Why? Revival produces evangelism."
As part of Sherwood Pictures, Catt has appeared in the New York Times, on the 700 Club, the Dr. Phil Show, Glenn Beck, Washington Post, Baptist Press, Leadership Journal, and FamilyLife Today among many other national media. But he's the first to say that filmmaking is not the hallmark of Sherwood's faith in God. Surrender is.
Michael Catt is the think-outside-the-sanctuary leader making good on his church's goal to "change the world from Albany, Georgia." He's also founder of Sherwood's annual ReFRESH revival conference. In 2008, he headed the Southern Baptist Convention Pastors' Conference, representing more than 42,000 churches. He is a prolific author, speaker, conference founder and leader, and pastor to pastors.

Faith Comes By Hearing Makes Historical Progress
/PRNewswire/ -- 2009 was a busy year at Faith Comes By Hearing, the world's foremost Audio Bible ministry.
This international Bible organization recorded new Audio Bibles, launched new outreaches into more nations and designed and deployed new Audio Bible technologies.
Faith Comes By Hearing established more than 85,000 Bible listening groups in villages, slums, schools, shanty towns, hospitals, orphanages, prison systems, house churches and mega-churches. Estimates suggest more than 8.5 million people heard the Word of God this year alone.
More than 130 Audio Bible recordings were started in 2009. Nearly 50 Bible recording teams, made up of national workers, dispersed to dark and dangerous lands, faced hardship after hardship, some even endured persecution to record God's Word in a format their fellow tribesman can use.
A new outreach, the Military BibleStick project, grew tremendously this year. More than 34,000 Military BibleSticks found their way into backpacks and cargo pockets of deployed and stateside service members through military chaplains serving around the world. With the recent commitment of 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, Faith Comes By Hearing expects a surge of new requests to meet the growing need.
The ministry also field tested the Mini Proclaimer(R), a palm-sized Audio Bible designed to disciple small groups of 30 people or less. The Mini Proclaimer(R) comes pre-loaded with the entire New Testament and has a memory card slot, allowing workers to proclaim God's Word in areas with multiple languages.
In May, the ministry released the Audio Bible Ambassador(R), an online innovative Bible distribution project that inspires users to download Audio Bibles in other languages to reach others through the Internet.
Another online development, a streaming Audio Bible player, well-received around the world, now has more than 500,000 people listening to the Bible in their own language.
At home, almost 14,000 churches and parishes have participated in the Audio Bible campaign, called You've Got The Time. Faith Comes By Hearing provided more than 4 million Audio Bibles through this campaign.
In Houston, the ministry worked with hundreds of churches and parishes in a city-wide campaign called You've Got The Time Houston. Nearly half a million people listened to the Bible in their homes, cars, at work or privately.
Faith Comes By Hearing anticipates to help millions more hear God's Word in their own language in 2010.

Sherwood Pictures Announces Fourth Movie: COURAGEOUS
/PRNewswire/ -- Sherwood Church, home of the hit independent movies FLYWHEEL (DVD only), FACING THE GIANTS, and FIREPROOF (2008's top indie film), at its Sunday evening service tonight, announced the theme and title for Sherwood Pictures' fourth movie. Senior Pastor Michael Catt, Executive Pastor Jim McBride, and ministers Stephen and Alex Kendrick--collectively the leadership team of Sherwood Pictures--made the announcement.
"The movie is about fatherhood and the title is one word: COURAGEOUS," Alex Kendrick said, briefly outlining the plot. "Four fathers who are all in law enforcement--who protect and serve together--go through a terrible tragedy," he said. "They begin looking at their role as fathers . . . and they begin challenging one another to fulfill God's intention for fathers."
That single-word title, Pastor Catt said, echoes God's call for men to "rise with courage" in their homes and as leaders. This at a time when 4 of 10 marriages end in divorce* and more than a third of all children live away from their biological fathers.
"The statistics on fatherless children are devastating," McBride said. "And because the family is the building block of society, one important place to rebuild families is through fathers who stay and lead and love."
"God led us," co-writer and producer Stephen Kendrick said to the audience of church members, many of them volunteer crew, cast, or catering in earlier Sherwood movies. "We believe God is calling men to rise up with strength and with leadership in their homes, with their families and with their children."
"For more then a year we've prayed to be sure that we're pursuing God's idea and not our own," Catt said. "With action, drama, and humor, this film will embrace God's promise in the Bible to, turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers."
Focusing on Fatherhood
"We focus on the crucial role of father; it's not just to be a father who loves his kids," said Alex Kendrick, co-writer/director of COURAGEOUS. "It's to be engaged with a purpose--to be a father on purpose."
All four leaders of Sherwood Pictures are husbands and fathers. Pastor Catt has two children; Pastor McBride has four; Stephen Kendrick has four; and Alex Kendrick has six.
More Than a Movie
Sherwood movies entertain as they touch audiences where they live, and they show the means to live more fully through faith in God. FLYWHEEL focused on compromise and business integrity; FACING THE GIANTS on despair and hope; FIREPROOF on a dying marriage rekindled.
With previous Sherwood movies, fans, churches, and organizations across the country (and world) became "partners" in the movie's impact--giving prayer support for production, distribution, and the movies' messages. Ministries and outreaches used the films in creative ways. Churches built series and group studies on the topics; Sunday schools seized the momentum of good entertainment that emphasizes life-changing truths.
"It's been the Bible's story of Jesus multiplying the boy's fish and loaves," Alex Kendrick said. "God has multiplied these movies beyond our wildest dreams."
Principle filming of COURAGEOUS begins March 2010 in Albany. Like the previous three Sherwood films, COURAGEOUS will be marketed by Provident Films.

Patrick Henry, Founding Father: “It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too often that this nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.” [May 1765 Speech to the House of Burgesses]

Audio Bibles Designed, Deployed to U.S. Troops
/PRNewswire/ -- "The Military BibleSticks are a hit!" said a U.S. Army Chaplain. "Please send more. We will use them all!"
This is the typical feedback from military chaplains who have requested thousands of high-tech, portable Audio Bibles for their troops from Faith Comes By Hearing.
Faith Comes By Hearing, the world's foremost Audio Bible ministry, has designed and deployed nearly 22,000 Military BibleSticks to chaplains in Iraq, Kuwait, Kosovo and Afghanistan.
The Military BibleStick is a small, digital audio player that is pre-loaded with the Audio Drama New Testament. The Military BibleStick has a low-key design to reduce visibility in low-light situations. This Audio Bible fits easily into uniform pockets and is rugged enough to withstand unpredictable weather.
"There has been a tremendous response to the Military BibleSticks," said Troy Carl, Faith Comes By Hearing's national director. "Chaplains report the young people serving in today's military aren't reading a lot, but that the 'iPod' generation is positively responding to the Bible in this audio format."
Chaplains from every branch of the military have contacted Faith Comes By Hearing and requested these Audio Bibles for their service members. Currently, more than 200 chaplains are using Military BibleSticks in pre-deployment briefings, counseling sessions, weekly chapels and other spiritual services.
"The soldiers are so pleased with the Military BibleStick," said a chaplain at an Army training base in Georgia. "Now, I have a need of more. My office is filled with soldiers requesting these. I am sorry I didn't request more from Faith Comes By Hearing. This is a God send."
"Our soldiers told me they never imagined having an Audio Bible," said an Army Chaplain at a staging base in Germany. "They are able to listen to the Word of God while doing missions. It is so easy to carry -- anytime and anywhere. This little device is helping soldiers cope with their issues and concerns during deployments."
"We've had many soldiers come to our office looking for the Military BibleStick, but we've run out," said another Army Chaplain. "The soldiers really love these; thank you for providing these for the troops."
"It's a blessing to have our young people so hungry for the Word of God. This is a wonderful way for the men and women serving our country to engage in Scripture," said Carl.

McAfee School of Theology to Hold Ginn Lectures on Christian Faith, Modern Science September 15
Mercer’s James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology will hold the second annual D. Perry and Betty Ginn Lecture Series on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 10:45 a.m. in the Cecil B. Day Hall on the Atlanta campus. The lecturer will be Dr. Robert J. Russell, an expert on the relationship between faith and science. His topic will be “Scientific Cosmology, Philosophy and Creation Theology: Creative Mutual Interactions.”
“The Ginn Lectures bring leading authorities in the field to McAfee who challenge pastors and students to think about the relationships between science and faith as they explore the implications of each for the other on the frontiers of human knowledge and experience,” said Dr. R. Alan Culpepper, dean of the McAfee School of Theology. “Dr. Russell is one of the nation’s foremost experts on the interaction between theology and science, and his perspective will certainly advance this lecture series.”
Dr. Russell is the founder and director of the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences and the Ian G. Barbour Professor of Theology and Science in Residence at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif. He is the author of Cosmology from Alpha to Omega: Towards the Mutual Creative Interaction of Theology and Science (Fortress Press, 2008). /PRNewswire/ -- Two Bible technology powerhouses, LifeChurch.tv and Faith Comes By Hearing, have teamed up to offer free Audio Bible streaming at YouVersion.com.
Visitors to YouVersion.com can read the Bible in different versions and languages, add comments or insights, bookmark favorite verses, and even create an online Bible journal. The addition of Faith Comes By Hearing's streaming Audio Bible now allows visitors to listen to the Word of God.
"We're thrilled about partnering with Faith Comes By Hearing to offer Audio Bibles in more than 380 languages on YouVersion.com," said Bobby Gruenewald, LifeChurch.tv Pastor, Innovation Leader.

"By making these Audio Bibles available for free, we hope to remove many of the economic and cultural obstacles that can stand in the way of people experiencing Scripture."
"Faith Comes By Hearing's Audio Bibles are dramatized word-for-word Scripture recordings complete with sound effects and music," said Troy Carl, Faith Comes By Hearing's national director. "People can listen to the Word of God while reading along or discussing with others through the free online Bible at YouVersion.com."

More than 1.8 million people from over 200 countries are using YouVersion, and have spent more than half a billion minutes (over 1,100 years) engaging in Scripture with this Web site and its mobile versions.
"We immediately received positive feedback about this streaming Audio Bible integration into YouVersion.com," said Carl.
Gruenewald agreed by saying, "Users have responded very enthusiastically to the addition of Audio Bibles on YouVersion.com and have let us know they are spending more time in God's Word with this new feature."

The Summit to Participate in National Back to Church Sunday Sept 13
The Summit is participating in Back to Church Sunday, a national movement of churches to encourage formerly churched people to ReThink Church and try it again. According to LifeWay Research, 38 percent of people are receptive or highly receptive to attending church. 82 percent say they would be open to attending church if a friend invited them. But, unfortunately only 21 percent of active church-going Christians invited someone to church last year! The Summit is joining with thousands of churches to help change those statistics by inviting everyone to attend church on September 13, 2009.
